Sunday!

So Bran went down into the crypts and gives a little speech about each of the Stark ancestors and then hears a story about the Children of the Forest. One of the things that strikes me as a particularly fertile field is the whole “beforetime” thing that the story has going on. Magic more or less went away, the secrets of the children are gone (but we have some arrowheads left). I’m hoping that this eventually turns into a sub-plot where there is research done into the old ways. (And I would have read more but Maribou arrived from the airport at that point and I had to throw the book in the back seat where it, sigh, stayed.)

So… what are you reading and/or watching?

  1. I went to see Cloud Atlas on Friday.

If you don’t find fairly blatant moral themes and shallow philosophy a deal-breaker, I’d recommend it. The visuals and cinematography are absolutely stunning, the variations in how the English language is used are wonderful (each era has its own speaking patterns), and the combination of historical fiction with sci-fi is something you won’t find in many other movies.

It’s definitely one where opinions will vary – some people will love it, others will find it the worst kind of Oscar bait. I think it’s a spectacular work of art.

    • Agreed in general. My own take: for the first third of the movie you’re just struggling to get the plot; for the second third you’ve got the plot down in general but the patios is kicking your butt and you’re struggling to advance it. Then in the final third you’ve either given up in disgust or you’re highly entertained (and possibly moved).

          • Cool. I have read the book (loved it) and have been on the fence about seeing the film, but y’all and some other reviews saying essentially the same thing (somewhat of a mess, but also somewhat genius*) might have tipped me over to ‘yes’, assuming I can get to a theater before it’s gone.

            * I am one of the few people who was glad to have seen “Southland Tales”. There are worse things to be than an ambitious mess.

  2. I have been finishing up the Illuminatus Trilogy. Quite a fun ride.
