Saturday!

Having beaten Triple A title Far Cry 3 and finding myself liking the game less and less as time passes, I’ve decided to just play a bunch of little games. Costume Quest (by Double Fine) is charming as heck, Nights Into Dreams (the reason I bought a Sega Saturn and had flying dreams for a couple of months!), Rock of Ages, Mark of the Ninja, and a handful of others that I’m just going to play for a bit and not feel like I have to *BEAT*. Though I did beat Costume Quest and Nights into Dreams.

So… what are you playing?

Jaybird

Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. If you've got a song for Wednesday, a commercial for Saturday, a recommendation for Tuesday, an essay for Monday, or, heck, just a handful a questions, fire off an email to AskJaybird-at-gmail.com

  1. XCOM (still), Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition, and Portal (I’m slow and Steam had a ridiculous sale where I could get both for, like six bucks!)

I played Portal straight through the first 13 levels in my first sitting and had to stop because the rapid perspective changes were starting to give me motion sickness!

  2. gonna finish far cry 3 sometime during this snowstorm, maybe. not feeling this whole magical compass nonsense.

interesting that the second most well-acted character was turned into a rapist.

    • Not to get *TOO* deep into it right now, but there are good ways to do the “unreliable narrator” thing and bad ways to do the “unreliable narrator” thing.

        • i actually have very little issue with the rapist character. it worked better than most of the game has for me. compared to the lead he was a goddamn thespian. it’s interesting that you see a msm character in a game who is neither stereotypically “gay” nor stereotypically evil. he’s clearly a terrible person, but if people were wincing it was because of the material rather than the presentation. (i’d like to think)

if only ubisoft had the chops to carry out that level of execution with the rest of the game. you can do awful shit (outside of the constant murder stuff, and the animal stuff if that sort of thing bothers you), but it has to be done well and for a purpose.

          • If you want me to question violence, perhaps you should have me break a few eggs on my way to the omelette that never arrives rather than killing rapists.

I’m not yelling at you. I’m yelling at the game’s writers.

          • The idea of “mercenary ravers” tickles me no end. If they didn’t completely blow all their surprise night attacks by virtue of copious glowsticks giving away their position, I expect their interactions with their victims to go like this:

            “GFT DNNNNN FRRRR!!”

            “What?”

(Spits out pacifier) “I SAID, GET DOWN ON THE FLOOR!”

          • their outfits are day glo yellow and grey/green. seriously. world’s deadliest professional paintball team.

on the plus side the german merc you work with in the 2nd half of the game looks like the technoviking.

  3. I really liked Rock of Ages for about an hour or two before I started to get bored with it.

You asked a while back about Half-Minute Hero and it was pretty cute but I couldn’t play it on the PC because the whole game throws what buttons to press at you, but they’re all labeled for the 360 controller (which I don’t have at the moment) and it’s pretty twitchy since you only have a few seconds to do anything. It’s constantly flashing ‘hit C!! NOW!!!’ only what it thinks is ‘C’ on my Logitech F310 is, I have no idea. . .

For my New Year’s Resolution this year, I’m going to start randomly choosing a game from my Steam list and give it at least 2 hours. I have about 90 unplayed games and maybe 75 I’ve played less than an hour. Gonna start Tuesday.
