Mindless Diversion Bait : ‘Indie Game’ Trailer

I think I’m the only contributor at the League that isn’t a gamer.  Given a few hours on a Saturday evening, there are approximately 1,000 things I would choose to do before sitting down with an X-Box for the night.  And yet this new documentary, Indie Game, looks unbelievably awesome:

One of the reasons gaming disinterests me is that unlike other medium, such as books, film or music, it always seems to lack what I might call a “human presence:” All is light plot to set up action – though it is quite often well done in dazzlingly beautiful ways.  But there is nothing in a video game that reveals to me anything about either myself or the creator that made it.  Indie Game seems like a great way for me to bridge that gap.

Being a non-gamer, it’s interesting that my favorite documentary of all time is The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters.  If Indie Game movie is anywhere as awesome as the trailer makes it look, a double feature with both should be required in every art movie house in the Western world.

Please do be so kind as to share this post.

  1. Indie Game looks awesome, but there are two gentlemen featured in the trailer that I want to kidnap and give makeovers to, starting with their eyebrows.

  2. I had the opportunity to watch this when it toured through philly several weeks ago. Definitely recommended. I’m not sure of all of the methods for watching it, but I know it the movie file can be pre-ordered on Steam for $6 or so.

While it didn’t have some of the dramatic tension that other docs have (it’s informing about a subject rather than bringing to light a conflict), it does a great job of depicting the more human side of game development.

    • “I don’t write a blog, but I do feel confident to neglect the author’s subjective-writing phrases like ‘seems’ and ‘for me,’ so that I can snark on the point I was hoping to whine about instead of the one he actually wrote about.”

      • What point did you write about?

As I see it, in this 10 sentence post there’s one sentence saying ‘hey guys, this looks cool, check it out’, and 9 saying ‘if you’re into that type of thing, which I’m totally not, I mean it really seems kind of pointless, but I watched this one movie one time and it was okay, so if I was trying to understand some of what goes into video games, which I’m totally not into, I might check this out. But only as an anthropological experiment’

I would never call myself a gamer. I play old versions if matter every few months. If I’m super bored, I might try to find a download of an old computer game I played in high school (e.g., “Heroes of Might and Magic II”). But, yea, you are not the only non-gamer here!
