The National Review has long fancied themselves as being the respectable voice of unabashed conservatism. They pride themselves on William Buckley’s alleged or actual alienation of the anti-Semitic, overtly racist, and downright crazy elements of the right and see these purges as being responsible (at least partially) for the Reagan Revolution.
The folks at the NRO decided that Donald Trump simply can’t be seen as one of them. Jonah Goldberg wrote an essay declaring that a conservatism that includes Donald Trump is no longer conservative. Pete Wehner at sister magazine Commentary also declares that Trump is no true conservative by hailing Saint Buckley’s response of the John Birch Society purge.
NRO’s readers responded to the Trump bashing with a Twitter revolt. Jeet Heer’s essay is a necessary read and run down. The tweets in #NRO are brutally racist anti-Semitic, homophobic. Surprisingly or not, they are all done under noms de tweet. The “Right Stuff” jeers “I guess he (Donald Trump) didn’t suck Israel’s cock hard enough for you NRO fags.” while using the equally ugly hashtag of #cuckservative. Lord Humungus (is this supposed to be a juvenile reference to penis size?) tweeted “Between adopting niglets, loving metizos and securing Israel’s borders, the #cuckservative has no time for his own white race.”
As far as I know, Donald Trump has never made any statements about Israel or Palestine that were pro-Israel and/or pro-Palestine. However, Trump’s appeal lies in who he antagonizes. A 68-year old man named Brian McCormack said “I’m not convinced that Trump is a true conservative, but the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I judge him in part by all the people he antagonizes.”
This is how the ugly right can latch their anti-Semitism onto Trump even if Trump has never said anything that was anti-Semitic and ignoring the fact that Trump’s son-in-law is Jewish. Trump’s supporters see him as doing nothing but a jeer at the respectable folks who won’t let them speak “hard truths” and dismiss them as vulgar for being racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic. Trump is necessarily anti-Israel and anti-Semitic because he agrees with the racists on Mexican immigration.
I don’t know how many people in the United States or the world are die-hard and unrepentant bigots in a very old-school style but the number is probably more than I am comfortable with. Vox theorized that the Democratic Party would be thrown into chaos if the GOP socially moderated on SSM and climate change and immigration. This doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon. The establishment Right has spent decades walking a fine line between baiting and denouncing their most bigoted supporters and now those supporters are biting back and demanding action.
