I know that I handed the music posts over to Glyph but… well, this is a tradition. We play Ave Maria.
And, yeah, one of those “I remember that!” songs. You know. Maintenance of fictions is important.
So… what are you giving up for Lent?

I am engaging in massive library check-out reduction. This is a compromise between the complete hold-cancelling ban of earlier years and the “dangit, I am in GRAD SCHOOL, leave me my vices!!!” reaction of the last year or two. 😀
so what’s the connection between ash wednesday and ave maria?
A million years ago, I saw the movie “Rango”. (The first half was a lot better than the second half.)
In the first half, there’s a lovely little scene where Rango is falling and the song that plays is an instrumental Ave Maria. This song got stuck in my head for a couple of weeks and I did what song-stuck people do: I looked for versions on the Youtube.
A couple of days before Ash Wednesday, I found Bobby McFerrin’s version and thought “this version is so awesome, I just have to share it” and figured that Ash Wednesday was as good a day as any to bend the “no religion” rule.
The following year, I found myself at the IHOP on Fat Tuesday evening enjoying my pancakes thinking that “I should do that again.”
So I did.
I’m kind of a fan of traditions. I find them comforting.
gotcha. thanks!
My Dignity
Good answer. Unfortunately I haven’t seen mine for years.
I think I’ll give up privation. Can I do that?
Oh man, looking back at the past Ash Wednesday posts, I listened to the Ruby song. I hadn’t heard that song in at least 15 years. So mission accomplished, sir (though 2 years late).
I’m giving up sacrifice for Lent.
Good call.
It is good to know that you finally decided to stop sacrificing humans to Quezacotl

No religion! 😉
Father Mulcahy: Klinger, I thought you were an atheist.
Klinger: I gave it up for Lent.
I had a friend in university who used to say he was giving up Catholicism for lent.
Ah, that must have been one of the episodes written by Alan Alda.
