I admit it. I went for years before listening to the Richard D James Album by Aphex Twin.
Why? Well, here’s the album cover:
I figured that the album was angry and would put me in a bad mood like Tool or System of a Down. Hey. I’m not in my 20’s anymore. I don’t need angry music. And if I did, I certainly would not need *CREEPY* angry music. I’m not going to link to the “Come to Daddy” video. It’s a pretty good video, actually. Creepy as hell. Don’t watch it before bed. I’d even advise that you not watch it after dark. Or even within spitting distance of sunset. Why? Because it’s nightmare fuel.
I have enough nightmares, thank you very much. I certainly don’t need any from my music.
Golly, was I wrong. (Well, about this album, anyway. The Come to Daddy EP is the album that I thought that this album would be.)
This album is absolutely and positively brilliant. It somehow manages to have more than 200 beats per minute and be mellow at the same time.
Sadly, I can’t play the Girl/Boy Song for you (which would have been my first choice) because not all music companies have really gotten this whole “internet” thing down (not that I blame them, Napster wasn’t exactly the best way for them to have been introduced to it). (And the other music video for the song is a downright trigger warning in its own right.)
So here’s 4. It’s the first track off of the album. It’s representative.
So that’s my recommendation for you this week.
Yes. Yes, probably for the best that one avoid the “Come to Daddy” video unless it’s a nice, bright sunny day outside.
Very true. Though, it’s a well done video that works with the song.
…but that’ll be little comfort late at night.
Yes, for a song that features the lyrics (if I heard correctly) “I want to eat your soul,” it is quite an apt video.
Not to my taste, perhaps. But definitely effective.
I do wonder if it counts as being prejudicial if one draws a conclusion about something from a disturbing image they chose themselves.
After your set up, I was u prepared for the very angry young men at the end of the video.
Apologies for that. Kids these days.
Typical. Had to watch “Come To Daddy” simply because of your warnings. Creepy? Yes, but also really, really good.
