Sunday!

I’ve picked up the first TPB of Mark Waid’s Irredeemable. It’s yet another deconstruction of the superhero but one that I hadn’t seen before.

Spiderman, Batman, Green Lantern, so on… as crazy as they’ve been in the past, they’re still all fairly emotionally mature. This book is about someone who… well, isn’t.

One of the scenes from the first TPB is a flashback to “The Plutonian” (mmm hmm) saving the lives of everyone in a baseball stadium by defusing a robot with a bomb. One of the things you see The Plutonian hear is someone up in the bleachers say “just another fruit wearing his underwear in public”. A flashback from the second (or is it third?) TPB shows The Plutonian saving a guy on a yacht from a pirate attack. He tells the guy “you’re safe now” and the guy says “look at these bullet holes in this wood! I paid a lot for this boat! Can you do something about that? I bet that it’d only take you a few seconds!”

Anyway, The Plutonian is now Earth’s biggest Supervillain. All of the other heroes (and a handful of villains) are trying to figure out how to stop him.

It’s compelling… but to go into details why would probably delve too far into political considerations for this blog. I’ll see if I can’t throw a complete review in the coming days into the sidebar of the main page.

But that’s what I’m reading.

So… what are you reading?

Jaybird

Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. • I’m jealous. Wonderful, fun, geeky-indulgent read. If you like it, The Baroque Cycle is actually even better.

This Plutonian thing sounds very interesting too. I’ll have to look into it when I’m done with A Song Of Ice And Fire, which right now sees me trudging through the beginning parts of A Feast For Crows. So many new POVs and characters I haven’t had much time to start caring about makes the going tougher than it ought to be for recreational reading.
