Sunday!

So it looks like Daenerys went into labor, Tyrion disappointed his father once again by succeeding, Arya learned how to kill pigeons, and now Bran is talking about the crow in his dreams again.

One of the things people told me about this series before I started was that “nobody has plot armor” but it feels like they should have told me “oh, except the Lannisters. They pretty much do what they want and their disappointments are stuff like ‘oh, we only mostly won’.”

I also made the mistake of watching Girl With The Dragon Tattoo which was one of those “technically brilliant, why am I watching this?” movies that had me fascinated by the plot (seriously, the old, old man asking the disgraced journalist to investigate a 40-year old unsolved murder? That’s a great hook) but… man, I used to love David Fincher’s stuff. Now? Eh. If I wanted to be depressed, I’d just read a copy of Newsweek. No politics.

So… what are you reading and/or watching?

  1. Not young justice, even though I should be. f*$%&ing cartoon network decided to delay the episodes an extra three months.

  2. The original title of the book was “Men Who Hate Women”. It really sums up the plot, doesn’t it? They changed it for the translations once people started liking Lisbeth Salander. (The author was dead before the books were published, so he had no input.)

The Swedish version was better. Fincher’s still got serious style chops, but it just fell short for me. (The sequels are already out, though personally I didn’t really care for them.)

Major differences: 1) You’re never left thinking, “Why isn’t James Bond should be kicking this guy’s ass?” 2) The encr fprar is more brutal. (But so is the eriratr fprar, later.) 3) Noomi Rapace simply IS Lisbeth Salander. She designed the hair and costumes for the character that were copied by the Fincher film.

  3. The Shutdown Song:

    A new day is born
After a long and hard ride
    So I’m on my way
    To a place called home
    But now I’m here
    Lost between machines
    Watching grey mute faces
Go on to destroy their lives

    Why do they do this?
    Stop it now!
    Cos in fact, you’re innocent
    Like a new-born child

Identity’s lost– No need for names
Identity’s lost– No need for ideas
Identity’s lost– No need for resistance
Identity’s lost– No need to be human

    Why do they do this?
    Stop it now!
    Cos in fact, you’re innocent
    Like a new-born child

  4. Do not worry about the Lannisters being too protected. Bad things will happen to them too, and there will be character development.

    • Yeah, I think one of the key lessons is that being on top is a good sign that you should be worried about how soon you’ll be on the bottom.

  5. Regarding A Song of Ice and Fire, the correct description is “none of the decent characters have plot armor, and only some of the horrible ones do”.

I’ve read “A Game of You” (okay, but not my favourite; there seems to be a pattern that I like even-numbered books of The Sandman better) and finished A Dance with Dragons, so now I can stop having ASOIAF devouring my time. Also re-watching big sections of Fringe Season 3 (alone with the final 2 episodes of Season 2). I’d forgotten how good the ending of Season 2 was.

  6. I actually read “The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo” last week.

I liked it although I’m not sure I’ll read the other two books in the trilogy.
