Weekend!

Holy cow, is tomorrow Friday already?

Indeed it is.

Work has this weird thing going on where everything is coming due at the same time *EXACTLY* when everybody’s giveadang is at the “it’s right before Thanksgiving” lows. One wonders how the country functions at all during this time of year.

In any case, I’m looking forward to a weekend spent doing errands with Maribou, gaming on Saturday night, seeing a good friend on Sunday (and maybe seeing a movie), and enjoying my second-favorite Claret tomorrow night.

So… what’s on your docket?

Jaybird

Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. If you've got a song for Wednesday, a commercial for Saturday, a recommendation for Tuesday, an essay for Monday, or, heck, just a handful a questions, fire off an email to AskJaybird-at-gmail.com

  1. Junior turns three on Sunday! There will be a pack of toddlers invading my home at 2 pm. Watching him grow up brings on a whole mess of emotions. The crying began tonight with the bedtime story about the day he was born. It should subside by Monday evening at the latest.

  2. Recuperating from Detroit. I’m growing to hate air travel. I’d rather drive 1000 miles than put up with the stress of dealing with TSA and being packed like a gerbil into a pressurised flying can.

A few lovely moments though. Descending onto the cloud deck over Detroit, the plane banked and there was the shadow of the aircraft, surrounded in a nimbus of heiligenschein. A bit of quick math, the jet’s 30 meters long, hold out my finger at arm’s length, check one eye, then the other, ten times displacement, distance to cloud roughly 600 meters, estimated speed 150 m/s. But we’re descending, ah hell. Into the cloud deck, all sense of proportion lost, the clouds flitting by as the wing motors whine.

Detroit lay below, grim and grey. An irate little man at Hertz: “I have a reservation for a car, says right here 2:43 and there’s a lot full of cars AND I WANT A CAR AND I WANT TO SEE A MANAGER.” Standing there with my new crew, lord these are great kids, one of whom really ought to be in comedy, cracking up as he mimics this Unhappy Camper.

A few corporate tschotschkes, all those introductions. Sure wish I could get those architects down in NOLA. Think I’ll petition for them to come on an extended visit.

The weekend will probably be eaten up writing presentations. I loathe PowerPoint but that’s what everyone uses here, not only that, but they’ve got corporate standards, whole forests of macros and colour standards and fonts. Maybe I’ll sneak out for a photo trip around Metairie.

  3. Nose to the grindstone.

I’ve got this stuff that supposed to take scratches out of CD’s, so I have to listen to all my CD’s to see if they have scratches in them.
I only ever seem to get to listen to them in the truck any more, because the neighbors at the new place complain whenever I play music.
I have an old Dell laptop that I run WinAmp on, with an external hard drive with everything compacted into mp3’s, and I run a cable to my Crate GFX-212.
2 x 12 is the only way to go.

    • Please report back on the success of scratch removal. I have a few that have issues, and an option to repair would be nice.

  4. Social time tonight. Celebrating the youngest daughter’s birthday tomorrow (14? Unbelievable) She has requested Waffle House for breakfast. Simple pleasures…

UFC tomorrow night. Household projects on Sunday.

The wife is in Florida with friends so I am going to sprinkle as much Call of Duty: Black Ops II time throughout the weekend as possible. I found my groove with multiplayer last night and quickly jumped from Level 3 to Level 8. The extra guns, sights, magazines that get unlocked with advancement are like crack. Super-addictive.

  5. the wife is in a conference in the caribbean so it’s me and the wee baby seamus. he’s got his central park zoo class (they get to learn about animals and make stuff and pet penguins and whatnot) and we’ll go to jersey to buy gas and see my folks and belatedly celebrate his 3rd birthday this week.

  6. Buying supplies to make Thanksgiving dinner. The usual housework.

More importantly, new content launch event in Guild Wars 2 this weekend.

I also get to look forward to a week off of work.

  7. Birthday party for a set of twins in The Four Year Old’s pre-school class on Saturday. Household chores and maybe try to clear the stump of the fallen weeping willow Saturday after the party. Watch Disk 2 of Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 8 Saturdy night.

No idea what I’m doing on Sunday since the Bills played last night.*

*Dear Chan Gailey – it’s all well and good that you actually won one last night, but is it really necessary to go with four or five wide and call deep passes that Ryan Fitzpatrick has no ability to throw every time you get a third and short situation, especially when you have the most exciting running back in the league on your team? I think you only ran the ball once on third and short last night, and it was a direct snap to Tashard Fishing Choice! Also, when you’ve got the ball inside the five with a 6’7″ pass catching tight end, would it kill you to have him run a route to the back of the end zone instead of an easily defended curl route two yard short of the end zone? Dumb penalties aside, your team actually played really well last night; there was no reason for the Dolphins to have had two chances to take the lead in the last four minutes other than your completely asinine play calling.

  8. Going to see how many craft sales I can find this weekend – it’s that time of year again! There’s at least a couple in my neighbourhood, which is one of the reasons it’s a wonderful place to live.

  9. The word Claret always make me think of Basil Fawlty tying to act like a wine snob:

“Jones! Pfffft. He doesn’t know Bordeaux from Claret.”

    “Bordeaux is a Claret.”

“Yes, ah, he wouldn’t know that.”

  10. Yesterday, I had dinner with friends and met their baby son and then we went and saw Skyfall.

Today is grocery shopping, haircut, shopping for the Holiday toy drive, Lincoln with another friend and sushi.

    Tomorrow: More cleaning and laundry.

  11. This morning the annual making of the Linzentort (four people, four hours and 42 linzentorts). housecleaning. tomorrow making Minecraft creeper t-shirts for a birthday party later this week and if I am really ambitious start on the lined drapes for the living room before it gets much colder.

    • I’m hoping this is one of those things where once you start making one, you might as well make two and if you’re making two you might as well make forty kinds of things.

        • i don’t often have the opportunity to say “that’s a hell of a lot of linzertorte” but that’s a hell of a lot of linzertorte.
