Weekend!

Last week, on Friday, I had plans for a poker game. At the last minute, I found out that I was completely mistaken and that the poker game wasn’t until *THIS* week. That gave me the wonderful fluffy feeling of having absolutely positively nothing to do on a Friday night. Of course, that means that, this week, I have a poker game.

Saturday and Sunday will be spend easing back into routine (chores, errands, laundry) as I prepare for the New Routine at the New Job at the New Building. I seem to recall being a lot more nervous about this sort of thing in ages past. Must not have sunk in yet. (Note to self: pick up Maalox.)

So… what’s on your docket?

  1. My birthday is today so I took the day off. Work tomorrow and then nothing too exciting for the weekend. Possible gaming with friends and most definitely reading my new birthday presents.

    • Happy Birthday, Miss Mary. I hope your son enjoyed his Christmas Cookie, that your birthday reading makes you feel young, and that the future spins you for many more revolutions about the sun.

      • Thank you, Zic and everyone, for the birthday wishes. It was 99% awesome. Since I turned 26, I’m hoping for a few more revolutions around the sun and plenty more years of feeling young(ish).

  2. Tomorrow morning will be filled with shovels filled with snow, scraped of the driveway, so that I can remove the automobile. Said automobile will take me to Sumner, ME, a glorious town about 4o min. away, that would make a fine and frightening setting in a Steven King novel. as always, I’ll watch the familiar houses, (it’s a route I often travel,) and see if the piles of snow reveal any new trailers in my never-ending game of ‘find the trailer,’ that lurks at the heart of so many owner-built homes around here today. Used to be little house, big house, back house, barn. Now it’s trailer, shed, family room, garage. After years of playing, they still surprise me; and someday, I hope to publish a photo essay for all to share in the fun.

Once in Sumner, I’ll knit with my knitting circle, eat, and gossip and we’ll have a fiber swap in celebration of the season of giving. This annual giving of yarn helps knit us together.

The weekend, however, is too far away still to say what wonder it holds in store. Beyond bread baking, meal making, snow shoveling, and knitting, there will be some music, some reading, and if I’m really lucky, a journey through snowy woods snowshoes.

  3. It’s birthday weekend, so I’m touching up the paint in most of the rooms of the house Saturday and planning a big meal for Sunday.
I’m still looking for inspiration on the latter part.

  4. 50th Anniversary Showing of Lawrence of Arabia.

This is also date number 3 with a woman I am starting to dig. She agreed to see Lawrence but the length has me worrried. Not everyone has my patience and desire to sit through long movies or other art forms. For example, I can contemplate seeing a marathon production of a 9 hour play about 19th Century Russian Intellectuals and consider it an day well-spent

      • You are the second person to give this advice. I know she does like Flowers but which kind.

If it does not downpour (the forecasted weather), I might just do that.

        • What does the weather have to do with it? Are you going to pick them yourself? Because that would be soooo sweet. Since it’s the third date, you shouldn’t worry too much about what kind of flowers. Maybe not roses or anything she is allergic to, if you even know her allergy info yet. Just go with what looks healthy this time of year.

          • *snort* now I’m wondering what the florist says if you say, “I want something that nobody’s allergic to?” (possibly something like: “what is wrong with you?” rofl. I am too catty.).

          • I don’t want them to get soaked and ruined! This is going to be a car-free date.

      • Luckily Lawrence of Arabia comes with an Intermission.

Though I’ve always wondered why modern epics don’t come with an Intermission. There are many modern movies that are just as long as Lawrence of Arabia and none of them have a get up and stretch period.

        • Since concessions are a big moneymaker, you’d think an intermission would be welcomed by the theaters.

I can only assume that they ran the numbers and 3 or 4 10-minute intermissions per day crowd out one additional showing of the film, and so is a net loss.

          • I wonder if it is a business decision, an artistic decision, or a bit of both.

I can see someone like Peter Jackson having balking at the idea of putting an Intermission into any of his films. I also whether fandom would put up with it or consider it a sign of weakness to want to get up and stretch.

But your point is also noted and that it would probably mean one less showing a day for certain films.

          • I think it’s psychological. If you say “this will have an intermission” it elevates it into a “cultural event”. And it emphasizes how long it is.

          • The intermission for Lawrence comes right after a scene that shows the sun mercilessly beating down on an endless desert. Everyone runs to buy a cold drink.

        • I can see watching 10 hours straight of something… but I love intermissions!! gotta stretch, talk, decompress.
