We continue through the (excellent) advice I was given in the Advice post. After the cut, we’ll have tons of songs and a couple of albums.

Sterling Crews kicks us off with a recommendation for Phantogram. I started with their single “Mouthful of Diamonds” and immediately fell in love. Check them out here:

I went on to listen to youtube’s “Top Tracks for Phantogram” playlist and continued to be pleased (though, I gotta admit, Mouthful of Diamonds was as good as it got). Luckily, that’s still pretty danged good. And “eyelid movies” is one of those album titles that could easily start a “best album titles!” argument.

Will H. then mentioned Genghis Tron, whom I’d never heard of but thought had a cute name that struck me as likely to be techno so I did a search and found “Endless Teeth” which told me that not only is Genghis Tron a screamy metal band, but that they make music videos that remind me of Watership Down.

At that point, I took a deep breath and dove into Blaise’s recommendations. Swedish House Party is pretty much exactly what their name implies. Dance music, dance music, mixed with a little more dance music. But, lemme tell ya, after that last video, this one was a breath of fresh air. (Though I would have done it with cats.)

Knife Party was a group I’d never heard of before but listening to them, I was reminded very much of Skrillex. And now, a confession: I kinda like Skrillex. I know I shouldn’t and I know that everyone online makes fun of him but… dang. Dubstep works for me. Though, like with my caffeinated drinks, it works better for me when the sun is up than when the sun is down.

He then mentioned AWOLNation, a group with whom I was familiar but, jeez, “Kill Your Heroes” is not merely excellent advice for anybody, it’s my current fave of their songs (and they are quite skilled at making catchy alternativish rock).

I didn’t buy any albums from this crop of recommendations, but I did get a bunch of folks to keep an eye out for (and will use “Mouthful of Diamonds” as a seed song in the future).

  2. i’m not going to make fun of you about the skrillex thing because i really enjoyed a bunch of dhr stuff back in the day and the destroyer is on my top ten and brostep is basically a modern version of the world’s hardest stutter rush.
