Jaybird

Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. If you've got a song for Wednesday, a commercial for Saturday, a recommendation for Tuesday, an essay for Monday, or, heck, just a handful a questions, fire off an email to AskJaybird-at-gmail.com

  1. Whatever happened to the guy in that commercial? I bet that was his first and only acting job leaving him full of hopes and dreams of finally making it in Hollywood so he celebrated over at TGIFriday’s. One margarita too many and he found himself on a downward spiral. Went from driving a Volkswagen to a Honda to an AMC Gremlin which became his pied a terre in east Los Angeles. Reeking of triple sec he stumbles through the streets, his bleary eyes turning neon signs into rainbows that lead to soup kitchens rather than pots of gold. The police found him in 1993 wearing his natty sweatervest which was once woven with dreams and now infested with fleas and stained with tequila.

  2. Jurassic Park: The Game, from Telltale.

I’m a bit disappointed with the game play. I expected something closer to a traditional point-and-click adventure, while this is mostly about “press X to not die” play. Of course being a Telltale game, it’s got great story and characters. They really delve into the setting of Jurassic park in interesting and unexpected ways.

  3. Over at my other home, we’re starting another TF2 tournament this weekend – so I’m looking forward to that.

A major update to Minecraft just dropped this week and I’ve been doing a little of that – I’d really like to get back to multi-player eventually. No point in building giant projects if there’s no one to see them!

  4. I’m playing Kingdoms of Amalur, though I’ll be switching to Mass Effect 3 as soon as it arrives.

  5. So… what are you playing?

I’m trying to get Linux to work (or at least get a better idea of what’s not working and why), so I’m not really playing a game. Linux, however, seems to be playing with me…

      • The kitchen sink. I’ve got VMs for SUSE (I have a laptop install for this one, too), Mint, and Ubuntu (Mythbuntu, also). All the most recent versions (12, 12, and 11). I was thrilled and energized to discover that they have finally ironed out Samba, however…

SUSE – The Samba connection is there one minute, then gone the next. Also, no video. The codec tries to download but fails (Internet connection is good).

Mint – Samba connection credentials keep failing, despite my choosing “Remember forever.” Worse, it doesn’t ask me for new credentials, it just fails to connect.

Ubuntu – Is this new interface supposed to be a joke? Haven’t tried Samba much, except to see if it worked (it did). Video codecs weren’t native, but downloaded automatically. However, trying to fullscreen the video reeks havoc (this might be related to the fact it’s VM, but Mint doesn’t do this).

Mythbuntu (Half of the point of this project is for my TV machine, though I’m not set on using an interface designed for that – right now I am using basic Windows interface with good remotes) – Networking was a total bust. I suspect this is user error.

I’m trying multiple to narrow it down to which one I prefer the most and then try to hammer away at it. Mint is winning, but the jury is still out.

          • I thought about trying Fedora (it’s the only of the four I downloaded but didn’t try), but I was informed somewhere that SUSE and Fedora were extremely similar (ditto for Ubuntu and Mint, but I only tried the latter after seeing the former’s screwy new interface). So I should give Fedora a try?
