  1. Well, if you want to feel like a rebel/delinquent, you could do worse than this. I get that thing stuck in my head something fierce.

Or for the classics, go with this.

        • Must…resist…temptation….ah, screw it.

          Nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh
          Nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh

          BIRD MAN

          Nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh
          Nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh nuh-nuh

          BIRD MAN
          BIRD MAN
          BIRD MAN

          • My 3-yr old boy LOVES ‘Surfin’ Bird’. Original and Ramones cover both.

Until he heard ‘Rock Lobster’ which has surpassed ‘Bird’ in his estimation (I agree, wholeheartedly!).

He also likes Queen a lot.

    • There’s a cover of I Fought the Law and the Law Won that I’ve been looking for for… jeez… the longest time. It’s not an upbeat version. It’s almost a country version… downbeat. It’s a duet between a man and a woman and instead of the highlight of the song being those four chords, the highlight is when they sing “she’s the best thing that I ever had….” and they hold that note for just a beat too long.

      I can’t find it anywhere.

    • Hey Will, have you ever seen Son Volt? Good band (never saw Tupelo, but saw Wilco a couple times).

If you are liking them, try ‘Devotion + Doubt’ by Richard Buckner (but I warn you, it’s depressing as hell – beautiful though).

Actually most of Buckner’s stuff is good, his most recent got great reviews but I have not heard it.

      • Here’s a Buckner song:

        http://youtu.be/NgFgsZ8ZdY4

‘Oh my one, my one – you’ve *broken* me, at the vow below the vine’

The way he’s not even near the mike for the final, anguished, howled ‘where are you?’ – like a ghost.

        Amazing.

        • I kept waiting for the guitar to go between his legs.

      • I listened to Buckner last week! Devotion + Doubt is great, though Since really leapt out at me and was the one that got me hooked. I haven’t heard his latest.

  2. I helped a friend out of a jam last week, and they rewarded me with Springsteen tickets. So I’ve started listening to Wrecking Ball, Magic and Working on a Dream, his three latest albums.

I don’t want to be the guy that only sings along to B2R, Rosalita and Hungry Heart.

    • My wife’s brother is a HUGE (like, followed him around on tour for a while like a Deadhead) Springsteen fan, and he took us to see him. High-energy, certainly, but not my thing.

He thought pretty much the same thing when we took him to see Guided By Voices, so fair is fair I guess.

  3. A friend in college once somehow ended up with a button maker. He proceeded to make a few dozen random buttons. I have no idea where the ideas for them came from but one of them simply said: Mellencamp must die.

A roommate bought this button and wore it out to the bar. Naturally, we pumped $5 into the juke box, all Mellencamp.

It was not an unawesome night.

    • Kid 606 is still around?! I had ‘Down with the Scene’ & ‘PS I Love You’ back in the day but haven’t heard either in years (checks computer, yep, they’re in there).

What, is he touring with Cex for full-on ‘Surprise, we’re still around!’ effect?

      • no, he’s been doing a bunch of different things in the meantime, some of which was good (kill sound before sound kills you, the action packed mentalist, etc) and some of which was either ok or not great (resiliance, pretty girls make raves) or just unremarkable. this new one, on the other hand, is a good time.

  4. I have a friend on the Facebooks who posts a lot of music to his wall. It’s a lot of Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Stabbing Westward, Deftones, Radiohead, and the like. I occasionally use his wall as a playlist, and today is one of those days.

    • Not far enough – go back a decade further, my man!. Modern Lovers are da bomb.

Actually, if I wanted to dip my toes into solo Jonathan R, what’s the best starting point? I don’t really know that stuff at all (except for ‘Dancing in the Lesbian Bar’).
