Saturday!

I had thought that I’d be just talking about the usual games and talking about getting stuck in the usual places except I see that Steam has System Shock 2 on sale for 7 bucks. To my shame, I must admit that I’d never played it. When the first Bioshock came out, people who had played System Shock 2 complained that Bioshock wasn’t as good (of course not) or they praised Bioshock for finally modernizing some of the tropes that System Shock 2 handled so very well.

I think my thought process was “I don’t want to play it without playing System Shock first.”

Sigh.

Anyway, I picked it up now.

So… what are you playing?

  1. I bought Fez on Steam. It’s a 2D platformer that takes place in a 3D world that you navigate by rotating 90 degrees at a time to shift yourself into a different plane. $10 on Steam, and worth every penny, though a lot of the (optional) puzzles are so obscure that most will just be driven to consult a guide.

  2. ss2 is great and all, but i don’t know how great it is in 2013. that said, it does make bioshock look like clownshoes, generally.

    • Already it has made me feel dumb by giving me the easiest puzzle in the world WITHOUT TELLING ME THAT IT WAS A PUZZLE.

There was a downed ventilator shaft blocking a ladder. “How do I get past it? How do I get past it?”

I realized that I needed to search my surroundings, find a melee weapon, and use the melee weapon (after equipping it) to hit the debris and thus clear the way.

Bioshock came out and said “find a crowbar or something” before lighting a spotlight on a nearby wrench.

    • still fucking fantastic.
Jay, you should see if you can get SS2 to play using the “hacked out” Thief engine (from that french site I mentioned).
[yup. Thief and System Shock share an engine. Props to the designers!]

      • also, you can play system shock after you play SS2.
… bioshock is NOT as good.
        (erm, yeah, insert disclaimer here…)

  3. I’m waiting for my buddy to finish Bioshock Infinite so he will trade it with me for Tomb Raider.

  4. Still playing through Morrowind. Will I get to the expansion content before Shadowrun Return comes out next month, sucking away all of my gaming time? I don’t know.

I also made it through the tutorial of Eclipse on the iPad. I have not played a full game yet. If anyone would be interested in some multiplayer action, let me know. I have no previous experience with the game.

  5. I snagged a bunch of Star Wars games when they were on sale on Steam last week (KoTOR I and II, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, Empire at War, and both Force Unleasheds)….and picked up Deus Ex: Human Revolution a few weeks before that.

    Steam sales are awesome.
