For the last week, I’ve had the entire soundtrack to A Chorus Line playing in my head (1975, Broadway).

Man I hope I get it. I hope I get it. How many people does he neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed?

It was fun on Saturday. It’s less fun today. In any case, if you now have the play stuck in your head, I apologize. It was the only way to get it out of mine.

But I’ll now do what I can to get it out of your head… with a broadway tune that you probably only just got out of your head. Sorry about that.

The first thought was something from West Side Story, then Jesus Christ Superstar (no religion) but quickly realized that when I listened to that, I had to listen to all of Weber’s plays in my head really quickly and Cats has not aged well but Joseph is better than I remembered. Anyway, I went from there to Cabaret and Maybe this time had me thinking that there’s no way I can post that on a family blog (yowza, Liza) but then you think about Tomorrow Belongs To Me and you realize that you really can’t post something from Cabaret. It’s just asking for trouble. (No politics.) Little Shop? Guys and Dolls? Hey, I know!

        • There was a scene in Mass Effect 2 where one of your alien crew members discussed how he… it’s easier to just show you.

      • Mordin Solus has become a cultural touchstone in some circles.

        Well I suppose it had to be him – someone else might have gotten it wrong.

        • He’s one of the greatest characters to come out of the current console generation.

          He deserved better than I was able to give.

          • While Bioware has gotten a lot of it’s flack lately for its plots, they were honestly never that good at delivering a well-written story (KOTOR being an obvious exception). What Bioware has always been able to deliver was strong, complex and memorable characters. That’s why Mass Effect 2 is so good, being character-focused it played to Bioware’s strengths.

  4. Argh, musicals. Double argh. Ya’ll are definitely more cultured than me.

    Speaking of cultured, there used to be a band in Austin called The Scabs (a quick Google suggests there still is; man, I’m out of touch), fronted by this dude named Bob Schneider. They were a huge local live hit back in the late 90s and early 2000s, because all of their songs are incredibly dirty… make Spinal Tap blush dirty. Then Bob Schneider went solo, and turned out to be this really mellow, sensitive singer-songwriter type, and it suddenly became uncool to like him among the live music circles I traveled in back then. Except I never really stopped liking him. He got some amount of national success sometime in the early 2000s, and is still a fixture of the live music scene here (what’s left of it).

    I told you all of that to tell you this: this song has been stuck in my head all friggin’ day. And it’s not even from a musical.

    Anyway, if you loved Fiddler even half as much as I did, you should read the Sholom Aleichem stories it was based on. And after that you should read Maurice Samuel’s The World of Sholom Aleichem, which is, I’m pretty sure, the finest work of literary appreciation I’ve ever read.
