Battlestar Galactica will begin its season-ending run in a month and a half. And when it’s gone, it’s going to be gone. So it’s a great pleasure to see that the prequel series, Caprica, has just been greenlit. It looks like it’s going to take on some interesting issues of economic polarization, the impact of emerging technologies, and play off a sense of dread and foreboding based on the knowledge that the primary characters are destined to be the architects of Armageddon. If they get good writers, it will be awesome — science fiction the way it should be, topical, relevant to contemporary issues, and imaginatively exploring the implications of things that haven’t been and maybe can’t be thought through all the way yet.
