Evanescent Fame

So, I followed a link to read one of E.D.’s articles at Forbes. Below the fold was a splashy ad for links to Forbes’ “Celebrity 100,” which I presume is the 100 richest or most high-earning or most-powerful or most-something celebrities. Here was the picture accompanying it:

Who Are These People Anyway?

Three years ago, I knew who two of them were. And I did not recognize the one that I should have. That’s Jon Bon Jovi in the upper of the three center photographs, looking for all the world like Rob Halford in a Rogaine commercial. The other one I would have recognized three years ago would have been LeBron James.

How many of these people will be anything but answers to trivia questions in 2014?

  1. Really man? Jon Bon Jovi looks great, what’s the matter with you?

Perhaps I should pose you a Q: How many decades now have you jokers tried to undermine Bon Jovi with silly predictions and for how long has that failed to happen?

    • I’ve got nothing against JBJ; I think it’s great that he’s still rockin’ it even though he’s almost eligible to join AARP (born 3/2/62). I’ll sing along with “Livin’ on a Prayer” when it comes on the radio in my car or dance at a stadium when they play it. I thought he was surprisingly good in U-571. I just had to look close to realize that this guy with the short, sensible haircut and oh-so-butch leather vest was him, is all I’m saying. He’s so much… older than everyone else in that photo-teaser.

  2. I know who the woman in the left is, but that fact embarrasses me.

        • Mike, I imagine you’ll be relieved to know that you are incorrect. That woman is Lady Gaga, who is much more famous than Courtney Love ever dreamed.

If both of them were to fall off the planet, however, it would not trouble me unduly.

          • I actually don’t know if being incorrect is better or worse. At any rate, I’ll do my best to forget that I now know what Lady Gaga looks like.

  3. I believe Lady Gaga is going to be around much as Madonna is still around. Really she’s just a repackaging of the same media spin that Madonna was “at her age”.

Beiber? He won’t go away but as his core audience matures into the their teens, he’ll find he’s mostly just a nostalgia piece. He’s got enough of a following, however, that he can comfortably retire and probably buy a new boat each year just by doing a few concerts in modest arenas. Even if his popularity drops to 10% of it’s current value, he’ll still have enough fans world wide to keep him comfortable if mostly forgotten.

Taylor Swift’s been around longer than 3 years, I think, and actually has a good deal of talent spread around. I hope she hangs around but of the newest celebs there I fear she’s, like Katy Perry, will probably fall off the face of the earth sooner than later.

    • Taylor Swift’s breakthrough album was released in 2008.
