Democracy and capitalism are antagonistic entities. Democracy, like individualism, is based not on personal gain but on self-sacrifice. A functioning democracy must often defy the economic interests of elites on behalf of citizens, but this is not happening.

Here’s something that Whittaker Chambers said to William F. Buckley:
“I am a man of the Right because I mean to uphold capitalism in its American version. But I claim that capitalism is not, and by its essential nature cannot conceivably be, conservative.”
Democracy…is based not on personal gain but on self-sacrifice.
A nice thought, but a few lessons in public choice theory will dispel such romantic illusions.
