Alabama has the most of these with 15, followed by North Carolina with 10 and then Georgia and Texas with 9 each.
Most states do not have any. The western-most is in Texas, the northern-most is in or around Detroit, the eastern-most in Delaware, and the southern-most in either Miami or the Virgin Islands, depending on whether or not you count the latter.
Super Duper Geography Pedantry – The Virgin Islands is also further east than Delaware (approx 65° W for the former, 75° W for the latter)
You are right! I only remembered the VI locations after I’d pegged Delaware as the furthest east.
I can’t help but think this is related to some kind of Civil War thing, but the VI throws that, what with the whole ‘being Dutch during the 19th Century’ thing.
Then I was thinking maybe monuments to slaves (there’s a bunch at Battle Creek, MI), but I can’t believe there’s nothing outside of that zone or that it’s Alabama that has the most and not Georgia or Virginia.
Danish.
I agree that it feels Civil War-y aside from that the Virgin Islands are involved.
I agree that it appears to be U.S. Civil War related. My guess is counties named after Confederate heroes. The one near Detroit would be Calhoun County, Michigan.
Tuesday Hint:
Ignore the blue ones. Look only at the red. Click to enlarge.
I feel like this needs to be locations of some sort of a southeastern retail or restaurant chain, but none of my guesses are panning out- not Belk, not Krystal’s, none of them I can think of. The USVI hint should be pretty big, too, since it’s pretty clear from the map that we’re looking at something on St. Thomas, which is but one relatively small island with a pretty limited chain presence.
Some of these points form lines that are obviously US Interstates and mostly coincide with large cities, so the chain idea makes a lot of sense. I-20, I-85 and I-95 look pretty obvious from here. On the other hand, how many chains only have one location each in a bunch of major cities?
The blue points, if anyone needs convincing that they’re NOT relevant, appear to be the default Google Map pin location for those states.
Wednesday Hint: The first came to being when Martin Van Buren was president. The most recent came to being when LBJ was president. In both cases, they came to being in states neighboring or within general proximity of the home state of the President.
High schools named after assassinated presidents?
Nah, there’d be a lot more red pins on there.
Civil war museums?
Thursday hint: Early guesses and speculation about Civil Rights were very on-target.
HBCs?
Mark got it. HBCUs.
I had no idea Alabama would lead that, interesting!
Yeah, I was a bit surprised, too. On the other hand, if I’d been asked which state would have the most, I don’t know what I would have answered.
Someplace way down South but not Mississippi. So I’d have guessed either Georgia or Alabama.
Georgia would have been a really good guess. If I’d thought about it, that’s what I would have guessed. Wrongly, of course.
I would have guessed Georgia as well, but I think that’s caused by the relative prominence of the HBCUs in Atlanta.
Good job, Mark.
Buses from the Montgomery boycott?
