This is what the kitchen looks like now, after all of our work. First, the island, in the bay, which will be its usual resting place (at least, for now):
This picture should make clear that we aren’t quite done even yet. We want to replace the microwave, stove, and dishwasher so that they match the black motif of the appliances around them. We also need to finish restaining the built-in overhead light.
This last picture is clickable and expands to full resolution. It shows the soffit for which the house is named, as well as our color schemes for the kitchen-dining room and the front living room.
Pretty nice, huh? Maybe you don’t care for the black on the cabinets; our idea was to present a modern-European sort of look. And nothing says modern European like flat black and simple lines.
Very dramatic change! It looks a bit dark in the overall picture, but I’m sure it feels fine when you’re working in it. I thought the island was to have a butcher block top?
A change made on the fly during assembly.
Yup, looks good. B/W can really work well in some settings and I think this is one of them. When we bought our first house, it had a b/w kitchen but it looked more like a ‘work’ room for S&M play.I like the granite counter tops with the b/w. The 3rd color in the granite adds some much needed texture. Without it, it might look like our earlier kitchen. So if you replace it, be aware of that (unless of course you like the S&M look ;-}
Is that black velvet on the window treatments?Myself, I like the black cabinets and granite. We’d have probably picked out something more like that for out kitchen if we’d had the choice.
Hey, from here it looks like you have the same granite we do.We’d have either had black or a very blond wood for the cabinets if we’d had our way. Not sure what we’d have done for the granite.
So, you chose to put the island in the breakfast nook instead of a table, is that correct?Yeah, I think if you have a dining room and table, those little nooks are just wasted space. Remember how we turned the one at our last house into a bar. Unfortunately there was no way to babyproof it.
