I have a business trip upcoming to Pittsburgh. Anyone here familiar with the city? I am hoping to get out and find some good place to eat. Even if it isn’t Philadelphia, does getting a Philly Cheesesteak there count for anything? I will be staying here and won’t have a rental car, so if you know any place near there that’s a short cab ride (or better yet, within walking distance), that would be awesome.
So… any peeps from Pittsburgh out there?
PNC Park is rumored to be in the running for loveliest ballpark not actually in San Francisco.
Egads. I had a thoroughly useless and irritating business trip to Pittsburgh back in ’05. Got some good pictures of the downtown, but never found a good place to eat — after asking every Pennsylvanian and Ohioan I knew — and wound up eating Hardee’s and airport food.
Good luck, Will Truman. I’m sure there’s good food to be had somewhere in Pittsburgh. Maybe if you actually go downtown you’ll have better luck than I did. Be sure to bring your GPS; all the tunnels get confusing.
Will- My daughter & son-in-law lived in Pittsburgh until recently and they’re real restaurant hounds. She recommends 2 places in or near downtown (pronounced “duntun” by Pittsburghers): (1) ELeven and (2)Six Penn Kitchen, in that order. You can find reviews at OpenTable.com.

… you should go to the Strip District. I recommend Kaya’s, and there are plenty of places to shop for tasty treats.
Getting a philly cheesesteak is stupid. Go To Pamelas, Order Pancakes (if they’re good enough for Obama to get the chef to come to the white house…).
As for Fun Pittsburgh Food:
The Original Hot Dog Shop, in Oakland (otherwise Known as The Dirty O)
Yo Rita’s! in the South Side
The Sharp Edge (for drinking — order food which is made with beer).
Tessaro’s in Bloomfield — the best damn burgers, made fresh, and smoked on a grill.
Tram’s in Lawrenceville — tiny little Vietnamese place – the owner has a bit of an attitude.
… there’s plenty more. if you want something detailed (say, Thai, Chinese, Nicaraguan, Peruvian — ask on chowhound).
