When Evil Enterprises, Inc., attempted to register the trademark “Baseball’s Evil Empire”, the New York Yankees blocked them by successfully arguing that the true Evil Empire of baseball is the Yankees. Not that that would be a hard case to make.

After repeated requests, Mr. Steinbrenner responded “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
“Damn Yankees!”
This feels a bit like an oil company buying a patent for an electric car so that they can stop others from trying to build such a vehicle.
