Brett Favre broke Dan Marino’s career yardage record in style, with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings that placed Green Bay ahead of St. Louis 27-14 just now. A win plus a Carolina win over Seattle (currently the Panthers lead 3-0) will clinch a first-round bye for the Packers in the playoffs. Congratulations, Brett, and long live the new Passing King!
UPDATE: Carolina did defeat the Seahawks, and Green Bay did defeat the Rams, so that’s a first-round bye for the Packers. Dallas would need to lose at least two one of its three two remaining games (against the Eagles, Panthers and Redskins) in order to potentially lose home-field advantage, but that just might happen. I am disappointed, though, that Miami’s relentless pursuit of perfection has come to an end.
Favre’s closest competition for the yardage record is Peyton Manning, who as of today has 41,220 career passing yards to Favre’s 61,405. At the rate Manning has historically played, and if Favre retires at the end of this year, he will eclipse Favre’s record by the end of the 2013 season.
