Monday Trivia, No. 30

I give you ten years.

Now, I’m thinking of ten different events that took place, one in each of those ten years I give you. Although these were different sorts of events (some of which are somewhat similar to others), they all also have something very much in common. None of these events were in the least bit obscure, at least within the context of cultural and historical norms presently prevailing in Anglophone North America.

Oh, yes, I almost forgot to tell you the years themselves. (No, not really.)

The years are: 1848, 1905, 1923, 1933, 1958, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1988, and 1996. Enjoy, and work together if you have to!

  1. From the libertarian point of view, it’s all about statism:

1848: France becomes a (boo! hiss!) republic again
1905:Russia temporarily becomes a (boo! hiss!) republic
1923: Hitler’s first attempt at gaining power
    1933: Hitler is elected
    1958: Castro’s Cuban Revolution begins
1976: The socialist Jimmy Carter is elected
1978:Spain becomes a (boo! hiss!) democracy
1979: The economically liberal Shah of Iran is overthrown
1988: The tax-raiser is elected president
1996: The ruin is complete as the statist runs against the tax collector for the welfare state.

    • The ruin is complete as the statist runs against the tax collector for the welfare state. Wow. Case closed, man. It really is all abut Bob Dole, doesn’t it?

(However, this is not the answer the judges were looking for.)

      • It really is all abut Bob Dole, doesn’t it?

I will gladly split the prize with JB…

(However, this is not the answer the judges were looking for.)

        particularly since there isn’t one.

      • Yeah. You’ve got 3 out of the 10 figured out:

May 29, 1848 — 30th State (Wisconsin) admitted to Union

August 2, 1923 — 30th President of United States (Calivin Coolidge) takes office. Was not elected; took office after Harding’s assassination.

January 28, 1996 — Super Bowl XXX (Dallas Cowboys beat Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-17).

And the other seven are…? (Hint: If you need to, ask Dr. Saunders for help on four of them.)

    • So that leaves just 1905, right?

How about the 30th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony, since 1904 was the 30th presidential election?

      • Damn it Mark! After I thought I had just posted us getting the right answer. I think this is it (and a more Burt-like answer), so I will repost.

  2. I think Mark was right about the K-Derby, and Burt miscounted (or just added 30 to 1875 and forgot that he had to count 1875 itself, which is a pretty common thing to do.)

S0 I think Mark and I may have it wrapped up:

    1848 – Wisconsin becomes 30th State
    1905 – Agile wins 30th (er, 31st) Kentucky Derby
    1923 – Coolidge becomes 30th President
    1933 – Giants win 30th World Series
    1958 – 30th Academy Awards
    1976 – 30th Tony Awards
    1978 – 30th Emmy Awards
    1979 – Sonics win 30th NBA Championship
    1988 – 30th Grammy Awards
    1996 – Dallas wins Super Bowl 30

  3. CORRECTION –

Mark is right, and the answer should actually be this:

    1848 – Wisconsin becomes 30th State
    1905 – 30th Presidential Inauguration
    1923 – Coolidge becomes 30th President
    1933 – Giants win #0th World Series
    1958 – 30th Academy Awards
    1976 – 30th Tony Awards
    1978 – 30th Emmy Awards
    1979 – Sonics win 30th NBA Championship
    1988 – 30th Grammy Awards
    1996 – Dallas wins Super Bowl 30

And might I add, without the hint who would have ever – EVER!!! – even gotten a sniff of this?

  4. I was actually looking for the 30th award of the Stanley Cup in 1905, when Ottawa HC beat the Rat Portage Thistles, 2 games to 1. But Kentucky Derby and 30th Presidential inauguration are both good.

I’m pretty sure that mere mortals would not have been able to answer the question without a hint. But someone with the right kind of brain, you never know. I bet Rain Man could have seen it. Definitely. Definitely.
