A Quick Note From Alabama

I’m away from my regular life right now, attending to a very serious illness within my family. I don’t know if I’m getting a good feel for northern Alabama on this visit, but then again maybe I am. From what I can tell, it’s a lot like Tennessee (which is logical enough; I’m only about 45 minutes from both Tullahoma and Chattanooga). Suffice to say, I’d rather be at the mental and intellectual liberty to work on my next “Great Cases” post or to opine on the Florida primary or to muse about the latest quirk of popular culture I’ve come across — all of which would be much more pleasant than what I’m dealing with now. Also, I do believe I have some arrangements to finalize for Leaguefest, so stay tuned for that.

  1. Very sorry to hear about the illness in your family, my friend. I hope whoever it is is receiving good care, and has the fullest recovery possible.

    • I considered contacting you on the matter, as a matter of fact — but it’s well outside your area of specialty in terms of the medicine that’s going on, and now that I’m here I’ve a reasonable amount of confidence in the hospital and the medical staff. It’s discomfiting to not have at least some access to the doctors themselves but I consciously understand why that is the case, too. Really all I could have done is unfairly dumped some anxiety on you.

I’ll say this now, though: hooray for patient advocates.

Depending on the outcome (which is still very uncertain), it may be a while before I’m emotionally ready to share much more than this. As of the moment I’m writing, I’ve found some cause for hope along with all the anxiety.

Nevertheless, thank you, and the same to everyone else, for the good wishes.

      • If ever I can be of assistance to you, please know it would be a pleasure to do so. I believe you know how to get in touch with me, should you wish. That said, I’m glad you have confidence in the care your loved one is receiving, and you’re being looked after by the patient advocate. However, if you need someone to parse medical lingo or whatever, I am at your service.

      • I’m so sorry to hear that your family is going through a rough patch. I’ve been there, and I know how not fun it can be.

My thoughts & wishes are with you, my friend.

  2. I hope things work out well for you and yours.

If you were in southern Alabama, I’d have some restaurant recommendations to maybe take your mind off things. I’m afraid I don’t know of much in northern.

(I guess I am captive of the southern food culture. When I think of being in a new place, one of the first thoughts that comes to mind is “Where to eat…”)

  3. Hope for you and yours, sir, may things turn out for the best.
