The White House has announced its pleasure at the birth last week of Dick and Lynne Cheney’s sixth grandchild. Samuel David Cheney is a healthy eight-pound, six-ounce baby boy, the son of Mary Cheney and her partner, Heather Poe. Good for the White House for acknowledging Mary’s relationship with Heather as part of the happy news about baby Samuel. This is sure to cause them to take some political heat from the Administration’s base, a sapping of political support that this Administration can ill afford. But it is unquestionably the right thing to do to celebrate so happy an event as a new grandchild for so key a player in the administration as the Vice President. And why shouldn’t the people in the White House, particularly the Cheneys, be happy? Samuel David looks like a beautiful baby boy and he surely has a bright future ahead of him with a loving and supportive (and, let’s face it, affluent) family. That’s cause for happiness and joy, and I hope all the Loyal Readers join me in wishing the Cheney and Poe families our congratulations.
